Het masterprogramma antieke cultuur maakt je vertrouwd met de geschiedenis en cultuur van de klassieke oudheid, de invloed hiervan op latere tijden en de methoden, concepten en tradities van de studie ervan. Je doorgrondt de belangrijkste antieke literaire, archeologische en historische bronnen, zoals Plato’s Politeia. En je bezoekt de zichtbare sporen van de klassieke oudheid in Griekenland of Italië.
Ben je geïnteresseerd in de bestuurders, filosofen, veldheren en burgers die aan de wieg hebben gestaan van de moderne westerse beschaving? Doe je graag kennis op in literatuur maar ook op locatie? Ambieer je een baan in de academische of culturele wereld? Dan is dit masterprogramma iets voor jou.

Cultuurgeschiedenis/Cultural History
Mensen geven betekenis aan de wereld om hen heen. Ze identificeren zich met bepaalde maatschappijvormen, institutionele praktijken, narratieve constructies en alledaagse gebruiken. Dit proces van betekenisgeving en betekenisontlening noemen we ‘identiteitsvorming’. Omdat identiteiten cultureel bepaald zijn, nemen ze voortdurend verschillende vormen aan. Ze hebben dus een geschiedenis. Om in de cultureel diverse maatschappijen van het heden adequaat te kunnen handelen, is het van cruciaal belang die geschiedenis te begrijpen.
Het Masterprogramma Cultuurgeschiedenis / Cultural History bestudeert de vormgeving en waardering van de moderne, westerse wereld vanuit cultuurhistorisch perspectief, vanaf de middeleeuwen tot heden. Het programma biedt studenten diepgaand inzicht in de geschiedenis van de ideeën en praktijken die ten grondslag liggen aan processen van identiteitsvorming van individuen, groepen en samenlevingen.

Politiek en Maatschappij in historisch perspectief
Dit programma is erop gericht inzicht te ontwikkelen in de oorsprong en ontwikkeling van politieke en maatschappelijke instituties, en de invloed die dergelijke instituties hebben op sociale verhoudingen, economische welvaart en individueel en collectief welzijn.
Politiek en maatschappij
Het MA programma behandelt de vraag hoe en waarom vanaf de vroegmoderne tijd tot heden instituties - dat wil zeggen regels en organisaties - op lokaal, nationaal en Europees niveau hun specifieke vorm hebben gekregen, hoe ze werken, en wat hun maatschappelijk effect is. Deelvragen zijn bijvoorbeeld:
- Waarom worden zaken zoals welvaart, veiligheid, rechtvaardigheid en uiteindelijk universeel geluk in sommige samenlevingen (of delen daarvan) meer bereikt dan in andere?
- Op welke wijze spelen elementen zoals burgerschap, staatsvorming, vrijwillige samenwerking, partijvorming of de inrichting van markten hierin een rol?
- Waarom is het zo moeilijk om negatieve gevolgen zoals maatschappelijke polarisatie, vervreemding en milieuverontreiniging te vermijden?
Historisch perspectief
Deze vragen worden behandeld in een Europese context vanaf de Middeleeuwen, grofweg het afgelopen millennium. Kenmerkend voor die ontwikkeling is de overgang van multinationale rijken met een gelaagde en in steden, standen en feodaliteit gefragmenteerde soevereiniteit, naar nationale en soevereine eenheidsstaten, met een grote invloed op het leven van de burgers. Het programma biedt ruimte voor accenten in de late Middeleeuwen en vroegmoderne tijd, zowel als in de twee laatste eeuwen.
Theoretisch en vergelijkend
Met behulp van sociaal-wetenschappelijke theorieën en een vergelijkende benadering wordt gekeken naar de mechanismen die de opvallende overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen steden, regio’s, staten en werelddelen, maar ook tussen historische perioden kunnen verklaren.
Practisch en beroepsgericht
Het programma biedt de mogelijkheid om deze inzichten toe te passen op actuele en beleidsrelevante vraagstukken. Dat kan in een stage, maar ook in cursusonderdelen die op de politieke en maatschappelijke actualiteit zijn gericht.

Geschiedenis: Educatie en Communicatie
Heb jij de passie om je vak te willen onderwijzen? Heb jij een kritische en onderzoekende houding? Vind jij het leuk om met kinderen te werken én ben je bereid een hoge inzet te leveren? Schrijf je dan in voor dit tweejarige educatieve masterprogramma.
Je wordt opgeleid tot eerstegraads bevoegd docent geschiedenis. Je geeft les in het voortgezet onderwijs (onder- én bovenbouw van vmbo, havo en vwo). De opleiding is ook een goede voorbereiding voor een functie in de educatieve sector. Enerzijds vergaar je grondige, verdiepende kennis op het gebied van geschiedenis en anderzijds leer je die inzichten te ontsluiten voor anderen. Internationale Betrekkingen in historisch perspectief
“The world must learn to work together, or finally it will not work at all”, zei voormalig Amerikaans president Dwight Eisenhower in 1959. Zijn stelling heeft sindsdien niets aan kracht verloren. Stevent de wereld af op integratie of polarisatie? Hoe is de huidige internationale orde ontstaan?
Centraal in dit masterprogramma staan de politieke relaties tussen staten, internationale organisaties en machtsblokken in de afgelopen tweehonderd jaar. Dat maakt dit masterprogramma uniek in Nederland. De nadruk ligt op de periode na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Je kunt je verdiepen in onderwerpen als de Nederlandse buitenlandse politiek, kolonialisme en dekolonisatie, mensenrechten en internationale veiligheid.
De opleiding geschiedenis, en met name de afdeling Geschiedenis van de Internationale betrekkingen, verzorgt dit masterprogramma. Het departement Geschiedenis en Kunstgeschiedenis heeft bovendien een uitgebreide staf met internationaal erkende expertise in onderwijs en onderzoek. Je kunt je daardoor in veel verschillende onderwerpen specialiseren.

American Studies
De master American Studies richt zich niet op het definiëren van het exceptionele karakter van de Amerika en haar inwoners. Centraal in deze master staan de culturele interacties en onderhandelingen binnen een multiculturele en zeer diverse samenleving. De Verenigde Staten worden dus niet in een isolement bestudeerd maar in interactie met de internationale gemeenschap om zo de Amerikaanse cultuur te definiëren. De focus ligt daarmee op het debat over de Amerikaanse beschaving en haar relatie met de rest van de wereld.
Er wordt in de master naar de Verenigde Staten gekeken vanuit een Europees perspectief. Hierbij zal gebruik worden gemaakt van culturele en politieke geschiedenis, literatuur en kunsten en incorporeert zowel populaire cultuur als intellectuele geschiedenis.
Kernthema’s zullen zijn culturele hiërarchie, cultureel imperialisme, nationale identiteit, anti-americanisme en globalisering.

History: Cities, States and Citizenship
The Master’s programme in History: Cities, States and Citizenship offers students a thorough introduction to the study of history as an academic discipline that is divided along temporal lines (antiquity, the Middle Ages and modern and contemporary history) and along thematic lines (political, cultural, socio-economic). The programme focuses on subjects linked to the theme of Cities, Citizenship and Human Rights in various periods and from a variety of thematic perspectives.
With the focus on Cities, Citizenship and Human Rights, the Utrecht history programme is anchored in the Western tradition, but it aims to systematically place these themes in a global context. The connection between state formation, urbanization and citizenship, with related themes such as the history of human rights, can be traced back to Greek antiquity.
These issues, which at first glance seem to be formulated primarily in political terms, have significant social, cultural, and economic dimensions. These interconnections form an excellent starting point for a programme that offers both general and specialized training in historical research.
The Research MA History: Cities, States and Citizenship is taught by experienced researchers. In recent years they have developed strong research projects on such topics as cities and citizenship in antiquity, the formation of early medieval polities, the institutional stimuli of and obstacles to economic growth, human rights, urban cultural formations and citizenship and modernity. They are therefore excellently positioned to train and lecture on these topics at an advanced level. In keeping with Utrecht tradition, the programme also offers a thorough training in epistemological and historiographical issues.

Conflict Studies and Human Rights
During recent decades, the world has witnessed a multitude of armed conflicts that have affected people all over the globe. Millions of people have been killed and many more have been forced to flee because of war. Societies have been disrupted, and economies severely affected. Armed conflicts continue to threaten the lives, livelihood, and future of millions of people. The MA in Conflict Studies and Human Rights focuses on studying and engaging contemporary conflict and associated human rights issues.
Current realities have forced the international community to address contemporary conflicts with a combination of military, humanitarian, political, economic, and development-related measures. So far, however, the record of conflict management has been mixed. Notwithstanding incidental successes, there have been several less successful attempts and even outright failures.
This highlights the need to better understand the nature of contemporary conflict, and to ground this understanding in empirical research and theoretical explanations. Apart from a better understanding of conflict per se, there is also a lack of trained personnel in this rapidly growing professional field. It is against this backdrop that UtrechtUniversity offers a one-year selective international Master’s programme in Conflict Studies and Human Rights.

Comparative Woman’s Studies in Culture and Politics
This is a highly interdisciplinary and comparative MA programme in the fields of gender, culture and politics. The emphasis is on comparative insights (at both national and international levels) into the functioning of gender and ethnicity. Special attention will be paid to the political and policy aspects of cultural developments.
Students following this programme will acquire knowledge about the methodologies and theory of Women's and Gender Studies. This knowledge will enable them to critically assess research findings in this field. They will also study the interaction between gender and ethnicity.
What measures have been taken, in the past and the present, to prevent discrimination in these areas? And what roles have been played by international organisations and institutions, both commercial and not-for-profit? Students will also learn to use new media and ICT skills to present their knowledge to experts and non-experts.
Graduates of this programme will have a good knowledge of the national and international infrastructure of institutions in the fields of ethnicity and gender. They will then be able to apply this knowledge to good effect in a professional context.

Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities
The research Master's programme in Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities offers students thorough training in the history of reflection on Western culture, science and society from 1500 A.D. to the present. It combines a universalistic perspective and an interdisciplinary approach in order to integrate the knowledge and methods of the various disciplines in the history of science.
Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities is an interdisciplinary programme in which the Descartes Centre and the Faculties of Science, Medicine, Social and Behavioural Sciences and Humanities co-operate. The courses based on the expertise in the history of science in the four participating faculties emphasize the following aspects:
Analysis of Western thought regarding the human ability to intervene in the mechanisms of nature and society;
Confrontational and comparative analysis of four fields of study with different social orientations, types of institutionalisation and scientific methods. These fields of study are:
a) Humanities – arts/language and communication;
b) Social Sciences – sociology/psychology;
c) Natural Sciences – physics/chemistry/biology;
d) Biomedical Sciences – medicine/psychiatry/veterinary science
Study of the institutions that have helped science acquire a fundamental status: the statutes of researchers and intellectuals.

Medieval Studies
This MA programme focuses on the interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages, examining the material and intellectual lives of the societies developing in Europe between 500 and 1500 AD.
You will gain an understanding of the theoretical background to academic study within the humanities, with particular attention to medieval studies. You will also be prepared for independent academic study of the Middle Ages.
In studying the Middle Ages, knowledge of both written and unwritten sources (archival documents, literature, music, pictorial art etc.) is indispensable. These sources can be studied meaningfully only when taking into account their interdependence. For instance, images can only be interpreted through the consultation of textual sources, and it is virtually impossible to form an idea of medieval realities as described in textual sources without consulting archaeological remains, works of art and other relics of material culture.
Literary works in the vernacular more often than not borrow from Latin literary traditions, while the texts studied to gain knowledge of daily life were produced by the same authors who produced historical literature and literary works in general. For these reasons, students need to be trained to study several disciplines independently and to be able to evaluate the value of research in other relevant disciplines.
In the field of medieval studies internationally, reflection is increasing on the (consciously or unconsciously) accepted epistemological foundations of the various disciplines concerned with the Middle Ages. This reflection on the fundamentals of medieval studies is leading to important theoretical innovations. The programme pays ample attention to these developments, enabling graduates to engage in current intellectual debates.
