When is someone a political prisoner? What does it mean to be one? In an attempt to supress the Irish Republican Army, the British government puts members of the IRA behind bars in 1981’s Maze prison in Northern Ireland. The lives of these men are made impossible by the harsh prison lifestyle, but this, in their eyes, not the worst: they are not recognised as political prisoners. As a result they try everything to prevent their cause from getting erased and their efforts from being forgotten, no matter the cost.

Hunger(2008), by director Steve McQueen, is a vivid portrayal of the tragedy of the Northern Irish Troubles and the imprisonment of members of the IRA. In a short lecture, Dr. A.L. de Heus will compare the struggles of the IRA as portrayed in the film to her own findings, based on her research and interviews with IRA-members.

All are welcome! The screening of Hunger will take place on the 1st of April at the VERA. Doors open at 20:00, and we kick of the evening at 20:30. Tickets are €4,- for members of GHD Ubbo Emmius and for non-members tickets are available through VERA. It is possible to sign up until the 25th of March.
